Mater is Radiator Springs' rusty, humorous tow truck and one of Lightning McQueen's closest friends. He introduces himself as the town's resident towing specialist and becomes central to the film's comedy and emotional story.

The character's full name is Sir Tow Mater, a pun on the word “tomater.” His design was inspired partly by the appearance of old tow trucks and by real vehicles seen during the filmmakers' research trips along Route 66.

Larry the Cable Guy provides Mater's voice in the Cars films. Mater is not a mechanic, although he knows the town well and helps with practical tasks. In Cars 2, his ordinary towing background becomes part of the story when he is mistaken for an international spy.
