In Pixar’s Cars 3, Lightning McQueen enters the Florida 500 after returning to competitive racing.
The Florida 500 is the major race that forms the climax of Cars 3. Lightning enters it after a difficult training period with Cruz Ramirez and a renewed decision to continue racing. The event brings him face to face with Jackson Storm, the technologically advanced competitor who has dominated the season.
The race also becomes the setting for Lightning’s change in role. Rather than treating success only as a personal comeback, he uses Doc Hudson’s example and helps Cruz take her opportunity. Cruz ultimately races under the number 51 and defeats Storm, while Lightning adopts a mentor role.
The Florida 500 should not be confused with the Piston Cup, which is the championship competition featured in the first film. Cars 3 uses the Florida 500 as its decisive event and as the point where Lightning’s career enters a new phase.
