In “Pericles, Prince of Tyre,” Pericles’s wife who is lost at sea is Thaisa. She is the daughter of Simonides, king of Pentapolis, whom Pericles wins as his bride after competing in a tournament.
Thaisa marries Pericles while he is traveling through the eastern Mediterranean world of the play. On their voyage back toward Tyre, she appears to die while giving birth to their daughter, Marina. The sailors insist that her body be placed in a coffin and cast into the sea, believing this will calm the storm.
The coffin reaches Ephesus, where the physician Cerimon discovers that Thaisa is still alive and revives her. Believing that Pericles has died, she becomes a priestess in the temple of Diana. Pericles, meanwhile, leaves Marina in Tarsus and spends years grieving both his wife and daughter.
The family is eventually reunited in a sequence of revelations. Pericles recognizes Marina in Mytilene, and Diana directs him to Ephesus, where he finds Thaisa. Marina is their daughter, not Pericles’s wife; Lychorida is Marina’s nurse, while Dionyza is the woman who plots against her.
