In Pandora’s myth, which quality remained inside the jar after all the evils escaped?

The story behind the answer

In Pandora’s myth, hope remained inside the jar after the evils escaped.

Hesiod’s Works and Days says that Pandora opened the container and released the many troubles intended for humanity. She then replaced the lid before Hope could escape. The detail gives the myth its most enduring symbol: despite disease, toil, pain, and other hardships, hope remains available to humans.

The exact interpretation is debated. Some readers view Hope as a blessing deliberately preserved for humanity. Others note that Hesiod calls it a spirit or force associated with expectation and asks whether keeping it inside the vessel is itself ambiguous. The ancient text does not offer the simple modern slogan that hope is always comforting.

Another common mistake is assuming that Hope flew out last. In the traditional wording, Hope remains inside when Pandora closes the container. Later paintings, poems, and popular stories often simplify the scene, but the surviving Hesiodic account specifically makes her retention the final image.
