In Pandora’s Greek myth, which god is usually said to have ordered Pandora’s creation?

The story behind the answer

In Pandora’s Greek myth, Zeus is the god who orders Pandora’s creation.

Hesiod places the episode after Prometheus steals fire and gives it to humanity. Zeus responds by devising a punishment for mortals and for Prometheus. He instructs the gods to create a woman whose arrival will bring trouble to humankind, and Pandora is then fashioned and equipped with divine gifts.

The myth makes Zeus the central authority behind the plan, while other gods perform particular tasks. Hephaestus makes the woman, Athena gives her instruction and clothing, Aphrodite supplies charm, and Hermes gives her deceptive qualities in Hesiod’s account.

Some modern retellings simplify the story by making Pandora independently curious or by presenting the container as Zeus’s direct gift. The ancient narrative is more structured: Zeus initiates the punishment, and Pandora becomes the human vehicle through which it reaches the world.
