In Pandora’s Box, which goddess taught Pandora women’s crafts and dressed her?

The story behind the answer

In Pandora’s Box, Athena taught Pandora women’s crafts and dressed her.

Athena was the Greek goddess associated with wisdom, strategic warfare, and skilled crafts. In Hesiod’s account, she helped prepare Pandora by teaching her crafts and adorning her with clothing. Her contribution is one part of the coordinated divine construction ordered by Zeus.

Pandora’s creation therefore combines different kinds of divine power. Hephaestus supplies the crafted body, Aphrodite supplies beauty and desire, Hermes supplies speech and a deceptive mind, and Athena provides clothing and practical accomplishments. The name Pandora reflects this collective contribution.

Modern versions sometimes describe Athena simply as giving Pandora wisdom, but that is not the clearest Hesiodic detail. Athena’s role in the original sequence concerns instruction in crafts and presentation. This also connects the myth to Greek ideas about women’s household skills and social appearance, although later authors and artists reinterpreted Pandora in many different ways.
