Prometheus was the Greek Titan who gave fire to humanity and was punished by Zeus.
Prometheus is closely connected with Pandora’s story because his defiance supplies the reason for Zeus’s retaliation. After Prometheus took fire from the gods and gave it to mortals, Zeus arranged the creation of Pandora as a punishment for humanity. Pandora’s arrival is therefore part of the same mythic conflict between Zeus and Prometheus.
In another famous episode, Zeus chained Prometheus to a mountain, where an eagle repeatedly attacked his liver. Heracles eventually freed him in later mythology. Prometheus is commonly portrayed as a benefactor of humans, while Pandora’s story emphasizes the costs that follow Zeus’s response to his actions.
