In Pandora’s box mythology, what remained inside after all the evils escaped?

The story behind the answer

Hope remained inside after the evils escaped from Pandora’s container.

In the familiar version of the story, Pandora opens the vessel and releases the hardships, illnesses, and other troubles hidden within it. Hope remains inside when the container is closed, making it the final presence associated with the myth. This detail has inspired centuries of debate because hope can be understood either as comfort for suffering people or as another force held back from them.

The wording varies between ancient and modern versions. Hesiod’s account uses the Greek term elpis, commonly translated as “hope,” and the poem’s exact presentation is more complex than the simple moral often taught today. Some interpretations see hope as a blessing preserved for humanity; others ask why it was kept inside with the evils.

The phrase “Pandora’s box” is itself a later formulation, but the surviving hope is central to the popular retelling. It is not traditionally courage, peace, or memory.
