In Overwatch 2 role queue, the Tank role had one team slot removed.
The original Overwatch format used six players per team, normally arranged as two Tanks, two Damage heroes, and two Supports. Overwatch 2 changed role queue to a five-versus-five structure by reducing the Tank allocation from two players to one.
This change was designed to make matches feel faster and less crowded. With one fewer Tank, each Tank became more individually important, while the team had fewer overlapping defensive abilities and barriers competing for space. Damage and Support each retained two slots.
The change is sometimes described as removing a player rather than removing a role. Tanks remained a full hero category; only one of the two Tank positions disappeared. Flex is not one of the three standard role-queue slots, so it was not the affected answer.
