In Othello, what is the name of the Venetian senator who is Desdemona's father?

The story behind the answer

In Othello, the Venetian senator who is Desdemona’s father is Brabantio.

Brabantio appears at the beginning of the play after Iago and Roderigo wake him with news that Desdemona has secretly eloped with Othello. Shocked that his daughter has married a Moorish military commander without his approval, he accuses Othello of using witchcraft to win her affection.

The dispute reaches the Duke of Venice and the Senate in Act 1, Scene 3. Othello explains that Desdemona fell in love with him while listening to stories of his adventurous life, and Desdemona confirms that she freely chose him. Brabantio must accept the marriage politically, but he remains bitter and warns Othello that Desdemona may deceive him just as she has deceived her father.

Readers sometimes confuse Brabantio with Lodovico or Gratiano, who are his kinsmen, or with Montano, a Venetian official associated with Cyprus. Brabantio is not merely Desdemona’s parent: his reaction establishes the play’s conflicts over race, authority, marriage, and trust.
