In order to catch the Man in Black, Roland must make the ultimate sacrifice. What price must he pay?

The story behind the answer

To catch the Man in Black, Roland must sacrifice the life of the boy, Jake Chambers. In Stephen King's The Gunslinger, Jake has become Roland's companion during the pursuit across the desert and through the tunnels beneath the mountain.

As the railway track begins to collapse, Jake hangs over an abyss while Roland continues toward the Man in Black. Jake begs Roland to save him, but Roland chooses his quest and lets him fall. The decision is especially painful because Jake had already helped Roland survive, and the two had formed a bond during their journey.

Jake's death is not simply a violent plot twist; it establishes the ruthless logic of Roland's mission. The gunslinger's pursuit of the Dark Tower and the Man in Black repeatedly demands that he place destiny above friendship, compassion, and ordinary morality. Jake later becomes one of the central members of Roland's ka-tet, making this sacrifice even more significant within the wider series.

The Man in Black then uses a tarot-like reading to connect Jake with future companions and events, including Eddie Dean and Susannah Dean.
