Operation Olympic, the first stage of Operation Downfall, was planned to target Kyushu.
The operation was intended to capture the southern part of Kyushu, Japan's southwestern main island. Allied planners expected to seize airfields and territory there, creating bases for air support and a staging area for the later invasion of the Kanto Plain on Honshu.
Olympic was scheduled for November 1945, but Japan surrendered before it began. The planned assault was expected to be enormous, drawing on forces already deployed across the Pacific and on additional units from elsewhere. Japanese planners also anticipated an attack on Kyushu and prepared defenses under their own Operation Ketsugo.
Kyushu is sometimes confused with Honshu in descriptions of Downfall. Honshu, the largest Japanese island and home to Tokyo, was the target of the second stage, Operation Coronet. Hokkaido and Shikoku were not the primary landing objectives named in the two-stage Allied plan.
