In Operation Downfall, what was the planned target of Operation Coronet near Tokyo?

The story behind the answer

Operation Coronet was planned to invade the Kantō Plain near Tokyo.

Coronet was the second phase of Operation Downfall, the projected Allied invasion of Japan. It was scheduled for spring 1946 after Operation Olympic had captured positions on Kyūshū. The Kantō Plain was selected because it contained Tokyo, major transport links, important ports, and a large concentration of Japan's political and industrial infrastructure.

The plan depended on airfields and supply bases secured during Olympic. Allied planners expected Coronet to be an enormous amphibious operation, potentially larger than the Normandy landings. Japan anticipated the general danger and organized Operation Ketsugō, a nationwide defense strategy that called for concentrated resistance against the expected invasion.

Coronet was never launched. Japan accepted the Allied surrender terms in August 1945, making the projected 1946 invasion unnecessary. Confusion sometimes arises because Downfall was the overall invasion plan, while Olympic and Coronet were its two component operations.
