Operation Downfall called the planned Allied invasion of Kyushu in November 1945 Operation Olympic.
Olympic was the first stage of a proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands. Its objective was to seize southern Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, and establish air bases for a later assault on the Tokyo region.
The operation was scheduled for November 1, 1945, with Okinawa serving as a major staging area. Planners expected fierce resistance and prepared a very large naval and ground force. The invasion was never carried out because Japan surrendered in August 1945.
Operation Olympic is often confused with Operation Coronet, the second stage of Downfall. Coronet was planned for spring 1946 and targeted the Kanto Plain near Tokyo. Operation Pastel, meanwhile, was a deception plan connected with Olympic, while Majestic was a later replacement code name.
