In Operation Downfall, Operation Olympic was planned to invade Kyushu.
Operation Downfall was the proposed Allied invasion of Japan’s home islands if Japan refused to surrender. Its first phase, Operation Olympic, was scheduled for November 1945 and aimed at the southern part of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island. Okinawa was intended to serve as a staging area for the operation.
The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for spring 1946 and would have attacked the Kantō Plain near Tokyo on Honshu. Together, the two phases would have required enormous Allied forces and were expected to produce severe casualties on both sides.
Operation Downfall was canceled after Japan surrendered. The plan is sometimes mistakenly described as a single invasion of Tokyo, but Tokyo was associated primarily with Coronet, not Olympic. The planned Kyushu landings never occurred because the war ended before the invasion timetable began.
