Artful Dodger
Answer
Artful Dodger
In Charles Dickens’s “Oliver Twist,” the young pickpocket who works for Fagin is the Artful Dodger, whose real name is Jack Dawkins.
The Dodger is the most accomplished child in Fagin’s criminal network, a gang of young thieves operating in London. He meets Oliver and brings him into Fagin’s circle, presenting the criminal life as clever, fashionable, and almost respectable. His nickname combines his skill at stealing with his quick-thinking, deceptive manner.
Dickens portrays him as a child performing adulthood: he wears oversized men’s clothing, uses Cockney slang, and carries himself with swagger. He becomes Oliver’s companion and tries to train him as a pickpocket, although Oliver is unwilling and unsuited to the work. The Dodger is also close friends with Charley Bates.
Despite his reputation, the Dodger is eventually caught with a stolen silver snuffbox. He is convicted and is apparently sentenced to transportation to Australia. Readers sometimes confuse him with Fagin, the adult who supervises the thieves, or Bill Sikes, the violent criminal connected to the gang.
