In Octavia E. Butler's novel Parable of the Sower, what is the name of the protagonist?

The story behind the answer

In Octavia E. Butler's novel Parable of the Sower, the protagonist is Lauren Olamina.

Lauren is a teenager living in a walled community near Los Angeles in a United States damaged by climate change, economic collapse, violence, and social breakdown. She possesses hyperempathy, a condition that makes her physically feel the pain and pleasure she witnesses in others.

After her community is destroyed, Lauren travels north with other survivors. She begins developing a belief system called Earthseed, whose central idea is that “God is Change.” Her writing and leadership gradually turn personal survival into a vision for building a new community.

Butler published Parable of the Sower in 1993, followed by Parable of the Talents in 1998. The novel is often discussed alongside climate fiction and Afrofuturism. Lauren’s surname is sometimes mistakenly written as “Olamina” without the first name, but the complete character name is Lauren Olamina.
