In Nyanga mythology, the epic hero with magical powers is Mwindo. He is the central figure of the Mwindo epic, an oral tale of the Nyanga people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, famed for his supernatural birth, magical scepter, and power of speech.
Mwindo’s father, Shemwindo, is a chief who decrees that his wives must bear only daughters. Mwindo is born despite this command and survives repeated attempts on his life, including being sealed inside a drum and cast into a river. He later returns to confront his father and restore order.
The hero’s adventures take him through the human world, the underworld, and the realm of the sky god. He battles monsters, encounters deities such as Nkuba and Muisa, and uses his conga-scepter to summon food, defeat enemies, and even revive the dead.
Daniel Biebuyck and Kahombo Mateene recorded and translated a major version of the epic, published in 1969. Mwindo is not the same as Sundiata, the celebrated hero of Mande tradition, or Kintu, a culture hero from other Great Lakes traditions.
