In Norse mythology, which two humans survive Ragnarök to repopulate the world?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, Líf and Lífþrasir survive Ragnarök to repopulate the world.

The pair are named in the Poetic Edda poem Vafþrúðnismál and also appear in Völuspá. During the destruction associated with Ragnarök, they hide in Hoddmímis holt, often translated as Mímir’s Wood or Hoddmímir’s forest. They survive by sheltering there and eating morning dew.

After the cosmic catastrophe, Líf and Lífþrasir emerge into a renewed world. Their descendants become the human population of the next age. This survival story gives Norse mythology a clear continuation after fire, conflict, and the deaths of many gods.

They are not the first human couple in Norse mythology. Ask and Embla are the primordial humans created before the human world was fully established. Nor are Líf and Lífþrasir gods or warriors in Valhalla; their role is preserving humanity through Ragnarök.
