In Norse mythology, which god rules Valhalla and welcomes the einherjar?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, Odin rules Valhalla and welcomes the einherjar. Valhalla is Odin’s vast hall in Asgard, where warriors chosen from battle are said to live after death.

The hall is associated with Odin’s role as a god of war, wisdom, poetry, and the dead. The einherjar train there each day by fighting one another, then return for a feast. Their preparation is linked to Ragnarök, when they are expected to fight alongside Odin.

Odin does not personally select every warrior in the surviving stories. The valkyries, supernatural figures serving Odin, choose many of those who die in battle and bring them to his hall. Freyja also receives a share of the battle-dead in Fólkvangr.

A common mix-up is treating Valhalla as the destination of every Norse dead person. Norse sources describe several possible destinations, including Hel and Fólkvangr, depending on the circumstances and the tradition being followed.
