In Norse mythology, which god receives the dead in his hall Valhalla?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, Odin receives the chosen battle-dead in his hall Valhalla.

Valhalla is Odin’s enormous hall in Asgard. Warriors selected from those who die in battle are brought there and become einherjar. They fight during the day, return to life, and feast together, preparing for the final conflict of Ragnarök.

Odin’s relationship with the hall reflects his wider identity as a god of war, wisdom, poetry, and death. The Valkyries act as the figures who choose and escort many of the warriors, while Odin is the hall’s ruler and host. The sources also describe Freyja receiving a share of those killed in battle in her field Fólkvangr, so Valhalla is not the only possible destination for a heroic battle-death.

Valhalla is therefore more specific than the general idea of a Norse heaven. It is a warrior hall with a particular daily routine and a role in Ragnarök.
