In Norse mythology, the blind god Höðr kills Baldr.
Baldr’s death is one of the central tragedies of Norse mythology. Frigg, Baldr’s mother, obtains oaths from nearly every living thing and object not to harm him, but she overlooks mistletoe because it seems too harmless. The gods then amuse themselves by throwing objects at Baldr, knowing that they cannot hurt him.
Loki discovers the omission and makes a weapon from mistletoe. He guides Höðr, who cannot see, into throwing it at Baldr. The missile kills him. The episode leads to the gods’ failed attempt to bring Baldr back from Hel and foreshadows Ragnarök. Some modern retellings call Höðr “Hoder,” reflecting a different transliteration of the Old Norse name.
