In Norse mythology, which god is destined to fight the hound Garmr at Ragnarök?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, Týr is destined to fight the hound Garmr at Ragnarök. The encounter is described in Ragnarök prophecies preserved in the Poetic Edda and summarized in the Prose Edda.

Týr is a god strongly associated with law, oaths, and courage. His best-known myth involves the binding of Fenrir. The gods place the magical fetter Gleipnir on the wolf, and Týr puts his hand in Fenrir’s mouth as a guarantee of good faith. When Fenrir discovers the deception and cannot escape, he bites off Týr’s hand.

At Ragnarök, Garmr breaks free and battles Týr. The two kill each other, making the confrontation one of the final mutual-destruction episodes in the mythic war. This is distinct from Odin’s fight with Fenrir and Víðarr’s later vengeance against that wolf.

Because some texts and interpretations associate Garmr closely with Fenrir, summaries sometimes blur the two stories. The traditional named opponent of Garmr at Ragnarök is Týr.
