In Norse mythology, where does the god Baldr go after his death?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, Baldr goes to Hel after his death.

After Baldr is killed through Loki’s scheme, his funeral takes place and his spirit reaches Hel’s realm. Hermóðr later travels there and asks Hel to release him. Hel agrees on the condition that all things in the world mourn Baldr, but the plan fails when a figure identified as Þökk refuses to weep. Baldr therefore remains among the dead until the events associated with the world’s renewal.

Baldr’s destination is often misunderstood because modern summaries treat Hel as a place reserved only for dishonored or wicked people. In the surviving myths, Baldr is a beloved god and still goes to Hel’s realm after his death. The story also distinguishes Hel’s realm from Valhalla and Fólkvangr, which are chiefly linked with selected battle-dead.
