In Norse mythology, what tree or plant does the goat Heiðrún eat on Valhalla’s roof?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, Heiðrún eats the foliage of Læraðr on Valhalla’s roof.

Læraðr is described in Grímnismál, a poem preserved in the Poetic Edda. The passage places it in the immediate setting of Valhalla and associates it with two remarkable animals: the goat Heiðrún feeds on its leaves, while the stag Eikþyrnir stands above the hall.

The text’s wording has led translators to render Læraðr as a tree, plant, or possibly a special tree-like growth. That variation explains why English references do not always use exactly the same description.

Læraðr should not be confused with Yggdrasil, the cosmic tree linking the major realms. Both belong to Norse mythic geography, but the Valhalla passage specifically names Læraðr as Heiðrún’s food source.
