In Norse mythology, what is the Old Norse name for the warriors living in Valhalla?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, the warriors living in Valhalla are called einherjar.

The Old Norse word einherjar refers to the slain warriors who are gathered in Odin’s hall. The term is commonly translated in ways such as “single fighters” or “army of the one,” though its exact linguistic interpretation has been debated. In the surviving myths, these warriors are not passive spirits: they train by fighting each other during the day and recover for feasting afterward.

Their daily combat has a clear mythic purpose. The einherjar are being prepared to take part in Ragnarök, the catastrophic battle that ends the familiar cosmic order. They are therefore more like an eternal warrior host than ordinary residents of an afterlife.

Einherjar should not be confused with draugar, the undead beings of Norse legend, or jötnar, the often-hostile giants. The word also does not describe every person who dies in battle; it specifically identifies the warriors associated with Odin’s hall.
