In Norse mythology, Skoll is the wolf that pursues the sun. The sun is personified as Sol, who drives a chariot across the sky while Skoll races after her. His pursuit helps explain the sun’s relentless movement through the heavens in the mythic Norse cosmos.
Skoll’s counterpart is Hati Hrodvitnisson, a wolf that chases Mani, the personification of the moon. Both wolves are associated with the giantess who lives in Ironwood and are commonly described as descendants of Fenrir, the monstrous wolf bound by the gods.
The distinction between these wolves is a frequent source of confusion: Fenrir is the famous wolf who breaks free during Ragnarok, Hati chases the moon, and Skoll chases the sun. Norse accounts say that at Ragnarok, Skoll finally catches and devours Sol, while Hati catches Mani. The names are sometimes spelled Sköll and Hati, reflecting Old Norse forms and modern transliteration differences.
