In Norse mythology, Sköll is the wolf that chases the sun.
Sköll is one of two cosmic wolves described in Norse tradition. He pursues Sól, the personified sun, across the sky. His pursuit explains the sun’s movement and becomes especially dangerous during Ragnarök, when the wolf finally catches and devours her.
Sköll is often paired with Hati Hróðvitnisson, who chases the moon. The two wolves are sometimes reversed in casual retellings, so the distinction matters: Sköll follows the sun, while Hati follows the moon.
Sköll is not Fenrir, even though all three are wolf-like figures in Ragnarök traditions. Fenrir is the enormous wolf who attacks Odin. The wolves’ roles overlap in the final catastrophe, but their targets and stories are different.
