In Norse mythology, what is the name of Baldr’s wife?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, Baldr’s wife is named Nanna.

Nanna is associated with Baldr in several medieval sources. After Baldr’s death, she dies from grief and is placed on his funeral ship, alongside him. Their son Forseti is a god associated with justice and reconciliation. The account of Nanna’s death appears most fully in Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda.

Nanna is sometimes confused with other goddesses because Norse mythology contains several figures with similar names and overlapping family traditions. She is not Sif, Thor’s wife, nor Idunn, the keeper of the gods’ rejuvenating apples. Nanna’s role is especially important in the stories surrounding Baldr’s funeral and the family connections of the gods.
