In Norse mythology, what happens to the einherjar at Ragnarök?

In Norse mythology, the einherjar fight for Odin at Ragnarök. The warriors of Valhalla are gathered for the final conflict between the gods and their enemies.

Their daily battles in Valhalla are understood as preparation for this event. At Ragnarök, Odin leads the gods and their forces against the giants and monstrous beings. The conflict is catastrophic: Odin is killed by the wolf Fenrir, while many other major figures also meet their foretold deaths.

The einherjar are not described as guaranteeing victory. Ragnarök involves the destruction of much of the old cosmic order, followed by a renewed world in surviving traditions. Their role is therefore heroic participation in the final battle, not escape from it or simple immortality.
