In Norse mythology, what do the einherjar do every day in Valhalla?

In Norse mythology, the einherjar battle each other every day in Valhalla. The warriors fight in the hall’s field, die during the combat, and are restored in time for the evening feast.

This repeating combat is part of the preparation for Ragnarök. The einherjar are not permanently killed by their daily fighting; their restoration allows the cycle of battle, feasting, and renewed battle to continue.

The daily fighting is sometimes mistaken for the final battle itself. Ragnarök is the prophesied catastrophe involving the gods, giants, and other forces, whereas the einherjar’s regular combat is a ritualized training pattern that takes place before it. The warriors also feast in Valhalla after fighting, eating and drinking under Odin’s supervision.
