In Norse mythology, what daily activity do the einherjar perform in Valhalla?
Answer
They fight each other
In Norse mythology, the einherjar fight each other every day in Valhalla.
The daily combat is part of their preparation for Ragnarök, the final conflict in which Odin’s forces face powerful enemies. The warriors battle until they are killed, but the mythic tradition says they rise again in time for the evening feast.
This cycle separates Valhalla from a modern idea of a peaceful paradise. Its inhabitants feast and celebrate, but they also train continually for a prophesied war. Their combat is therefore both an afterlife activity and military preparation.
The einherjar are not simply every person who dies in battle. They are the battle dead selected by supernatural choosers, especially valkyries, for Odin’s hall.
