In Norse mythology, what bridge connects Midgard and Asgard?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, Bifröst is the bridge connecting Midgard and Asgard.

Midgard is the realm of humans, while Asgard is the realm associated with the Æsir gods. Bifröst provides the connection between them and is commonly described in modern retellings as a rainbow bridge. The Prose Edda gives it a more complex description, including fire and great strength, rather than treating it as an ordinary natural rainbow.

Bifröst is important when discussing Norse cosmology and the afterlife because it is sometimes mistakenly presented as the route every dead person must take. The sources instead associate different journeys with different destinations. Gjallarbrú, for example, is the bridge encountered on the route toward Hel’s realm, so the two bridges should not be treated as interchangeable.
