In New York City's Times Square, what tower is used for the official New Year's Eve midnight countdown?

The story behind the answer

One Times Square is the tower used for the official New Year's Eve midnight countdown in New York City's Times Square.

The building stands at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and was constructed as the headquarters of The New York Times. Its completion helped give the surrounding area the name Times Square, replacing the earlier name Longacre Square.

The Times Square Ball is lowered from a flagpole near the roof of One Times Square. The building's large illuminated advertising displays now cover much of its exterior, making it one of the most recognizable commercial towers in Manhattan.

One Times Square is often confused with the nearby Times Tower name or with New York's Empire State Building. The Empire State Building is a famous skyline landmark, but the New Year's Eve ball drop occurs at One Times Square.
