In New York City's first Times Square ball drop in 1907, what company organized the celebration?

The story behind the answer

The New York Times organized New York City's first Times Square ball drop in 1907.

The newspaper had recently moved its headquarters to the newly built Times Building, later known as One Times Square. To celebrate the arrival of 1908, publisher Adolph Ochs arranged a public New Year's Eve event that included fireworks and a time ball lowered from the building.

The ball was created after fireworks displays became difficult to use safely in the crowded district. The first ball was about five feet in diameter, weighed roughly 700 pounds, and was constructed from iron and wood with 100 incandescent light bulbs.

The celebration quickly became an annual tradition. Although The New York Times later moved its headquarters away from Times Square, the building continued to serve as the symbolic home of the ball drop, which evolved into a major global broadcast event.
