In Neil Gaiman’s book Norse Mythology, which god is trapped inside a fishing net made by the gods?

The story behind the answer

Loki is trapped inside a fishing net made by the gods in Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology.

In Gaiman’s retelling of the myth, the gods capture Loki after he causes the death of Balder. Loki hides in a salmon form, but the gods discover his hiding place and construct a net to catch him. The scene adapts an episode found in the medieval Prose Edda, especially the account of Loki’s punishment.

After his capture, Loki is bound beneath a serpent. Venom drips toward his face, and his wife Sigyn holds a bowl to protect him. When she must empty the bowl, the poison reaches Loki, whose writhing is associated with earthquakes in the mythological story.

The fishing net episode is often confused with Thor’s fishing trip, in which Thor uses bait to try to catch the world serpent Jörmungandr. In Gaiman’s book, the net is part of the gods’ pursuit and punishment of Loki.
