In Michael, which label does Michael sign with for Off the Wall?

The story behind the answer

In Michael, Michael signs with Epic Records for Off the Wall. The film’s plot identifies Epic as the label for Jackson’s first solo album as an adult, released in 1979.

Off the Wall marked a major transition in Jackson’s career. Although he was already famous as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, the album established him as a powerful solo artist beyond the group. Quincy Jones produced the record, and its blend of disco, funk, pop and soul produced hits including “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You.”

Epic was part of CBS Records during this period and later became associated with Sony Music Entertainment. Motown is the label most strongly associated with the Jackson 5’s early recordings, which is why it can be an easy mix-up. Arista and Capitol were not the label named for Off the Wall in the film.
