Thor first appears as a Marvel superhero in Journey into Mystery #83.
The issue, published in 1962, was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby. It introduces the modern Marvel version of Thor, who is linked to the human physician Donald Blake and wields the enchanted hammer Mjolnir. The character is inspired by the Norse thunder god but is placed in a superhero universe with new supporting characters and conflicts.
Marvel’s Thor is therefore not identical to the Thor of the Poetic Edda or Prose Edda. Elements such as Mjolnir, Asgard, Odin, and Loki come from Norse tradition, while the secret identity and superhero format are Marvel inventions.
Journey into Mystery had originally been an anthology title. Thor’s popularity eventually led the series to be renamed Thor in 1970.
