In Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale, Offred's husband before Gilead is named Luke.
Before the theocratic regime takes power, Offred lives with Luke and their daughter. When Gilead reorganizes society, women lose legal control over money, work, property, and family relationships. Offred is separated from Luke and their child while being assigned to serve a Commander as a Handmaid.
Luke remains important through Offred's memories and uncertainty. She does not know for much of the novel whether he survived the family's attempted escape, and that uncertainty becomes part of her emotional and psychological struggle.
Luke is not the same character as Nick, a driver connected with the Commander and Serena Joy. The name Offred itself is also not her birth name; it identifies her as belonging to Commander Fred under Gilead's system.
