In Oryx and Crake, the genetically engineered humanoids are called Crakers.
Crake creates the Crakers as a redesigned human species intended to avoid the violence, hierarchy, sexual jealousy, and environmental destruction he associates with humanity. They have distinctive blue skin, enhanced health, and biological traits that limit certain conventional human behaviors.
After a catastrophic pandemic devastates civilization, Jimmy—later known as Snowman—encounters a surviving group of Crakers. He becomes their reluctant teacher and interpreter, explaining parts of the vanished human world through stories that gradually become myths.
Crakers are distinct from the novel's engineered animals, including wolvogs and pigoons. They are also not the same as the God's Gardeners, an environmentally focused human religious group appearing in Atwood's broader MaddAddam trilogy. The Crakers' creation is central to the novel's questions about biotechnology, control, and whether redesigning humanity can eliminate its destructive tendencies.
