In many traditional quinceañeras, a Catholic Mass may take place before the reception.
The religious service is commonly known as a Misa de acción de gracias, or thanksgiving Mass. During it, the quinceañera may give thanks, make commitments, and receive a blessing. The service is followed by the social celebration, which can include a formal entrance, dinner, music, and dancing.
Not every quinceañera includes a Mass. The celebration is practiced by families with different religious beliefs, and some choose a nonreligious ceremony or only a reception. The Catholic Mass is therefore a common tradition, not a universal requirement.
The Mass is also distinct from the reception. The church service has a religious purpose, while the reception is the gathering where families and guests celebrate the milestone with food, music, and formal customs.
