In Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Rome hosts the circus performance at the Colosseum.
After joining a traveling circus, Alex and his friends perform in several European locations. Rome is one of the film’s most recognizable stops because the circus stages its show near the Colosseum, the ancient amphitheater that has become a symbol of the Italian capital.
The Rome sequence is part of the animals’ effort to make the circus successful and secure passage back to New York. Their performances become increasingly spectacular as the troupe develops a distinctive new act based on the animals’ talents.
Rome is not the same destination as Monte Carlo, where the animals first encounter the circus troupe. The story also visits other European settings, but the Colosseum specifically identifies Rome. The film uses recognizable landmarks as visual settings while keeping the plot focused on the circus characters and their journey.
