In Luigi Galvani’s frog-leg experiments, what did the twitching muscles seem to reveal?

The story behind the answer

Luigi Galvani’s frog-leg experiments seemed to reveal animal electricity in the muscles and nerves of dissected frogs.

In the 1780s, Galvani observed that frog legs twitched when their nerves were touched with metal instruments, especially when an electrical discharge was present. He interpreted the movement as evidence of an intrinsic electrical force in animals, which he called animal electricity.

Alessandro Volta later disagreed with Galvani’s interpretation. Volta argued that contact between different metals could generate electricity, leading him to develop the voltaic pile. Their disagreement helped launch modern electrochemistry.

Galvani’s interpretation was incomplete, but the experiments correctly connected nerve and muscle activity with electrical phenomena. The term galvanism was later derived from his name.
