London's New Year's Eve fireworks traditionally use Elizabeth Tower as a prominent visual backdrop.
Elizabeth Tower stands at the north end of the Palace of Westminster and contains the Great Clock, whose largest bell is commonly known as Big Ben. The tower's illuminated clock face and position beside the River Thames make it a recognizable element in broadcasts of London's midnight celebrations.
The public fireworks display is staged around the South Bank and the London Eye, with fireworks launched from locations along the river and around the famous observation wheel. Television coverage often combines the fireworks, the London skyline, and the clock tower's midnight chimes.
A common mix-up is calling the entire tower “Big Ben.” Strictly speaking, Elizabeth Tower is the building, while Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell inside it. The tower was officially renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.
