In London’s annual New Year’s Eve fireworks, the famous clock tower commonly shown near the display is Elizabeth Tower.
Elizabeth Tower stands at the north end of the Palace of Westminster and contains the Great Clock and its bell, commonly called Big Ben. The tower’s illuminated clock face is a familiar visual element in broadcasts of London’s midnight celebrations.
The official New Year’s Eve fireworks display is centered along the River Thames, particularly around the London Eye and Westminster. The first large-scale modern display associated with the London Eye took place for the millennium at the end of 1999, welcoming the year 2000.
A common mix-up is the name Big Ben. Technically, Big Ben is the great bell inside Elizabeth Tower, not the tower itself. The tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.
