In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, what is the name of Denethor’s younger son?

The story behind the answer

Faramir is Denethor’s younger son in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. He is the younger brother of Boromir and serves as a captain of Gondor during the War of the Ring.

Faramir first appears when he encounters Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee in Ithilien. Unlike Boromir, he refuses to seize the One Ring when he learns of it, explaining that he would not pick up such a weapon merely because it lay by the road. This contrast is central to his characterization and to the story’s examination of power and temptation.

Faramir later becomes closely connected with Éowyn of Rohan. After the war, he is named Prince of Ithilien by King Elessar and becomes Steward of Gondor. Denethor’s two sons are often confused because both are important Gondorian warriors, but Boromir is the elder son and Faramir is the younger.
