In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, what inn stands in Bree?

The story behind the answer

The Prancing Pony is the inn in Bree in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The inn is run by Barliman Butterbur and serves as a meeting place for travelers, locals, and passing folk. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin stay there after leaving the Shire. Their arrival attracts attention because Frodo uses the name Underhill, and the innkeeper has received an important message from Gandalf.

Aragorn, known there as Strider, meets the hobbits at the Prancing Pony. He warns them about the dangers on the road and becomes their guide after the Black Riders attack. The inn therefore marks the transition from the familiar Shire to the wider and more dangerous world.

The Green Dragon and The Ivy Bush are different inns in or near Hobbiton, not Bree. The Golden Perch is another inn associated with Tolkien’s wider legendarium, but it is not the establishment where the hobbits meet Strider.
