In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, the land where the hobbits live is The Shire.
The Shire is a rural region in northwestern Middle-earth, settled and largely inhabited by hobbits. It contains familiar communities and places such as Hobbiton, Bywater, Michel Delving, and Tuckborough. Bilbo and Frodo Baggins both have homes in Hobbiton.
The Shire is deliberately presented as ordinary, peaceful, and agricultural, which contrasts with the wars and kingdoms beyond its borders. It is not the entire homeland of the hobbit species: other hobbits live in places such as Bree and Buckland. Tolkien drew on the English countryside, especially Worcestershire and the landscapes he knew from childhood, when imagining the Shire.
