In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, what is the name of Frodo Baggins’s gardener?

The story behind the answer

Frodo Baggins’s gardener in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium is Samwise Gamgee.

Sam, usually called Samwise or Sam, lives near Frodo in Hobbiton and works as his gardener. Gandalf discovers him listening to Frodo’s conversation and sends him on the journey to Rivendell. From that point onward, Sam becomes Frodo’s closest companion during the quest to destroy the One Ring.

His gardening background is more than a minor character detail. Sam’s knowledge of plants and his love of the Shire represent the ordinary domestic world threatened by the wider conflict. His loyalty is tested repeatedly, especially after Frodo sends him away near Cirith Ungol. Sam returns, carries the Ring for a time, and helps rescue Frodo.

Samwise is sometimes confused with Merry or Pippin, who are also hobbits and members of the Fellowship. Merry’s full name is Meriadoc Brandybuck, while Pippin’s is Peregrin Took. Neither is Frodo’s gardener.
