Bilbo Baggins’s home village in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fiction is Hobbiton.
Hobbiton is a settlement in the Shire, the rural homeland of the Hobbits. Bilbo lives there in Bag End, a comfortable smial built into a hill. His nephew and heir, Frodo Baggins, also makes Bag End his home before beginning the journey described in The Lord of the Rings.
Tolkien presents Hobbiton as a peaceful community of gardens, lanes, fields, and underground homes. Its ordinary domestic life contrasts with the dangers beyond the Shire, making the village an important symbol of the quiet world that the heroes seek to protect.
Hobbiton is sometimes confused with Bywater, another Shire settlement, or with the wider region called the Shire. Bywater is nearby, and the Battle of Bywater takes place there near the end of The Lord of the Rings. Hobbiton itself is the specific village associated with Bag End.
